What is the history of Levi Strauss & Co.?
Levi Strauss & Co. is a renowned American clothing company known for its iconic denim jeans. The company was founded in 1853 by Levi Strauss, a German immigrant, and David Stern, his brother-in-law, in San Francisco, California. Originally, the company's primary products were clothing, boots, and other items for the American frontier.
In 1853, Levi Strauss opened a wholesale dry goods business in San Francisco that became known as Levi Strauss & Co. Seeing a need for work pants that could hold up under rougher conditions, he and Jacob Davis, a tailor, created the first jean. In 1873, they received a U.S. patent for "waist overalls" with metal rivets at points of strain.
By adding metal rivets to work pants, which would be known as blue jeans, they created stronger pants for working men. In 1886, the Two Horse Trademark was introduced, symbolizing the strength of the clothing in the face of competition. In 1934, Levi Strauss & Co. introduced the first blue jeans for women. In 1936, the Red Tab was added to the right back pocket of the 501® jean, where it is still placed today.
By the 1960s, the popularity of jeans, jackets and other Levi’s® products lead the company to set up offices and factories throughout Europe and Asia. In 1982, LS&Co. Responded to the Growing AIDS Crisis with employee donations at the Kaposi Sarcoma clinic at San Francisco General Hospital. In 1986, Dockers® khakis revolutionized business attire when young professionals adopted khakis as their pant of choice and lead the charge in making casual wear appropriate attire for the workplace.
In 1991, Levi Strauss & Co. became the first multinational apparel company to launch a comprehensive code of conduct for all contract factories and licensees. The Terms of Engagement set out ethical standards, legal and environmental requirements, community involvement and standards to address child and forced labor, disciplinary practices, working hours, wages and benefits, freedom of association, discrimination, and health and safety.
In 2003, Levi Strauss Signature was launched, known today as Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™, the brand serves shoppers at mass-channel retail stores, giving value-oriented consumers access to products from a company with a heritage of high-quality jeanswear. In 2013, the Eureka Innovation Lab was opened, a research and development facility dedicated to design ideation and prototyping. In 2015, the company launched its Screened Chemistry Program, an industry-leading program that examines the health and environmental impacts of chemicals to identify safer alternatives and areas for innovation.
